The Integration of the Deaf into Society in RA

Since May 2003 with the contributions of the USAID WL the program called "The Integration of the Deaf into Society in RA" has been implemented. The goal of the program is to provide access to information for the 3500 deaf and dumb people living in Armenia by introducing the permanent use of sourdo-translations on some TV channels.

On June 18 2003 a questionnaire was conducted, concerning the problem of introducing sourdo-translations on TV channels. The participants of the questionnaire answered the following question: "In Your opinion what percentage of the total TV programs shuold be represented with a simultaneous translation of the sign language?" About 100 people participated the questionnaire. The data obtained as a result of the questionnaire are shown below.

The Results of the Questionnaire

On August 7 2003 a Round Table took place in the Camera Theatre. It was organized by "Prometheus" TV as a charity program-action. The participants were disabled people from different NGOs, incluing the young people with disabilities from "Will and Strength" NGO, as well as representatives from the Ministry of Social Security, "Prometheus" and "ALM" TV companies. The overwhelminf success of the program is accounted for by the fact that thequetion was raised by private TV cxompanies.Durinf the Round Table 32 positive responses were received through the proposed phone number.

 
 

On August 14 "Prometheus" TV represented a program dedicated to the problem of providing sourdo-translations on Armenian TV channels. The video material concerning the issue duscussed at the Round Table was represented; a video film concerning the problem of sourdo-translations was shown as well.
